Chapter Fourteen

“This is a dumb idea.” I stared out at Briar Lake and all the idiots running into the freezing water.

“But that’s why it’s fun! Come on!” Tanner dragged me toward the shore. How did he keep talking me into this shit? I’d worn my most conservative bathing suit, but I knew that wasn’t going to save me from the cold.

The Polar Plunge was a Briar Lake tradition. And it was a dumb one. Every winter, hundreds of students ran into the freezing waters of Briar Lake. Some stayed in for just moments while others, the craziest, stayed in much longer. Students had come out earlier to break up ice along the shore so we could even get in the water. Dumb.

Tanner grabbed my hand, and his long legs pulled us toward our icy doom. The first hit of water was like a million little pinpricks of ice. I only made it to my waist before I ran back out.

“Come on, Mia! It’s not that bad!” he hollered from where he was neck deep. I would’ve been completely underwater there. No, thank you.

I was already wrapped in two thick towels when he came to his senses and walked back up the shore to me.

“Give me one of those towels.”

“Absolutely not. You snooze, you lose,” I huffed.

“One of those was supposed to—Oh! There’s Kara! Catch you later!” He ran off down the beach like the below-freezing weather didn’t bother him at all. He was an alpha though, and they tended to run hot.

I looked around at all the other insane people out here today.

Will was finally coming out of the water with Hunter and some of their friends. I tried not to notice that Will was shirtless, but I failed. Miserably. I knew the guy was athletic, but he was practically carved from stone. My scent flooded the area as my appreciation turned into arousal. As if he could feel me watching, Will scanned the shore until he found me. As soon as we locked eyes, I looked away. Flushing red at being caught ogling him, I searched the crowd for someone, anyone else to talk to.

Like the knight in shining armor that he was, I caught sight of Grant down the beach and hurried to him.

I slid up behind him, placing my hands on his back. “Hey, handsome.”

He spun and, realizing it was me, took a step back. “Oh, hey, Mia. I didn’t expect to see you here. Doesn’t seem like your kinda thing.”

“It’s usually not, but Tanner said it was practically mandatory, so here I am. Why are you so far away?” I pouted and took a step toward him, but keeping the distance between us, he took one back. “Did you put on sunscreen for the plunge today? I can barely smell you. No offense, I just don’t like the smell of sunscreen that much.”

“Yeah, yeah, I did. It’s got a strong scent. Listen, I gotta run. I’ll see you at the next event.”

With that, Grant practically bolted off the beach, leaving me confused.
